The federal cabinet has approved an increase in the base electricity tariff, effective July 1, 2024.

This decision follows a proposal from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which recommended a hike of Rs. 5.72 per unit.

The suggested increase would raise the average basic electricity tariff from Rs. 29.78 to Rs. 35.50 per unit.

With NEPRA’s approval, the federal government will issue a notification to implement the new rates.

It’s important to note that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Pakistan to raise the electricity tariff by Rs. 5 per unit before July 10, 2024, as part of the prerequisites for a new program. The IMF has stipulated increases in electricity and gas prices as conditions for this new program, making a hike in electricity prices highly probable.
