The United Arab Emirates has entered a seven-day period of national mourning following the passing of Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region, who died on Wednesday. In his honor, flags will be flown at half-mast throughout the country.
Sheikh Tahnoon was a prominent figure, notably as a close aide and trusted companion to the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His death was reported by the state news agency WAM. Appointed on September 11, 1966, Sheikh Tahnoon held the dual roles of Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Chairman of Al Ain Municipality, significant positions he took just a month after Sheikh Zayed ascended to power in Abu Dhabi.
He played a critical role in the formation of the UAE, closely collaborating with Sheikh Zayed on the strategic efforts that led to the official declaration of the Union on December 2, 1971. Before this, he served as the Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture and was appointed Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi.
Sheikh Tahnoun’s influence extended across various sectors. In 1972, he was appointed to the board of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and in 1973, became the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). He was also known for his engagement with the community in Al Ain, fostering strong relationships and direct communication.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, reflected on Sheikh Tahnoun’s contributions, praising his years of service and expressing condolences to the Al Nahyan family and the people of the Emirates.
