England’s prominent all-rounder, Moeen Ali, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37, bringing to a close a remarkable career that spanned more than ten years.
Ali, who last played for England during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, made this decision following his exclusion from the squad for the forthcoming series against Australia.
In an interview with former England captain Nasser Hussain, Moeen Ali shared his decision. “At 37, with no selection for this month’s series against Australia, it feels like the right time for the new generation to take over,” Ali remarked. “I feel I have fulfilled my role.”
Looking ahead, Moeen Ali emphasized England’s need to prepare for future challenges, including the ICC Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.
“I could continue to push for a return, but I believe it’s important for the team to evolve,” he explained. “Being honest with myself, this is the right moment to step away.”
Since his debut in 2014, Moeen has been a pivotal player for England, participating in 68 Tests, 138 ODIs, and 92 T20Is, accumulating a total of 6,678 runs and 366 wickets.
He played a key role in England’s triumphs in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in Australia.
Known for his skills as both a batter and a spinner, Moeen concluded his Test career with 204 wickets, securing his place as the third highest wicket-taker among England’s spinners, behind Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann.
